What Is Exercise?

What does the word "exercise" mean? In The Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word exercise has several meanings. There are two that really apply to physical exercise. The first definition of exercise that I think applies to physical exercise states that exercise is, "exertion made for the sake of training or physical fitness." The second definition states that exercise means, "to train by or engage in exercise." Basically, physical exercise gets your body in shape and helps a person to stay physically fit and healthy.

  • Helps reduce blood pressure in people who already have high blood pressure

This is a Physical Activity Pyramid.

Physical Activity Pyramid.Similar to the Food Guide Pyramid, this physical activity pyramid is designed to help people become more active. If you are currently sedentary, begin at the bottom of the pyramid and gradually increase the amount of moderate-intensity physical activity in your life. If you are already moderately active, begin a formal exercise program that includes cardiorespiratory endurance exercise, flexibility training, and strength training to help you develop all the health-related components of fitness.
