On Saturday, October 23, Judson College served as one of the staging sites for the Tek.Xam certification exam. Ten students participated in the exam, which was administered live on the Tek.Xam web site. This exam was designed to measure a student's ability to use technical tools relating to problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills especially pertinent in today's workplace.

The exam was comprised of seven skill areas. The examinee was required to complete every section in order to pass the exam. Skill area one asked the participants to use the internet to research and evaluate a problem in order to reach a solution. In skill area two participants dealt with telecommunications, problem solving, technical terminology, and software/hardware components, among other things. The third skill area involved creating a multi-page website. The fourth skill area required participants to create an effective multi-slide presentation using a given topic. Participants demonstrated their ability with spreadsheets in the fifth skill area. They were asked to analyze raw data, draw conclusions, and create a spreadsheet and graph of the pertinent data. In the sixth skill area examinees used a word processing program to communicate data, incorporating graphs and tables as well as text. In the seventh and final skill area, the examinees looked at a case study, and ascertained the ethical issues involved, selected appropriate behavior, and defined legal terms.

Tek.Xam prepares students for today's highly competitive job market by positioning them for a broader array of job possibilities than they might have had with their primary college major. You definitely do not have to be a computer major or minor to take Tek.Xam. It will open the doors to anyone wanting to branch out in the technical market of job opportunities.

Tek.Xam is endorsed by over thirty major businesses nationwide. Among others are big names like AT & T, Bell Atlantic-Virginia, EDS, IBM, Reynolds Metals Company, and Tredegar Industries. Numerous colleges and universities across the country are participating in the Tek.Xam program. Among them are Emory & Henry College, College of William and Mary, Georgetown College, Notre Dame College of Ohio, Ouachita Baptist University, Roanoke College, Virginia Tech, Stillman College, and our very own Judson College.

We at Judson are very proud of our students who came and diligently participated in the Tek.Xam. Students who participated were the following: Melissa Boykin, Katie Hampton, Sabrina Daniel, Harmony Belflower, Elena Mishastaya, Jessica Davis, Rebecca Osborne, Susan Lemons, Amy Allen, and Michelle Whitehead.
